STAR Voting Action was founded as a sister nonprofit organization to the Equal Vote Coalition specifically to focus on the adoption of STAR Voting for public elections and everywhere else people vote. STAR Voting is a new voting method designed to eliminate vote splitting and provide all voters with an equally weighted vote. Under STAR, instead of only being able to support one candidate when you go to vote, voters score candidates from 0 up to 5 stars. The two candidates with the most stars overall are finalists. Your one full vote goes to the finalist you scored higher. The finalist with the most votes is elected!
By unlocking the power of your vote and allowing voters to support all the candidates they like, voters and candidates no longer have to fear the possibility of vote splitting. Eliminating vote splitting reduces the electability bias inherent in our current Choose-One-Only system, empowering voters to vote their conscience, dramatically reducing the influence of money in politics, and electing politicians who build consensus across the electorate.
There is an ongoing STAR Voting ballot initiative collecting signatures through July 2024 for the statewide ballot in Oregon. Additionally, we are launching a local ballot initiative for STAR Voting in Eugene that will be collecting signatures over Summer 2023. We are looking for volunteer canvassers to collect signatures on both initiatives. Collecting signatures is a fantastic way to plug in and make an immediate and direct impact as a volunteer.
