About Us

The New York School of Urban Ministry (NYSUM) equips Christians through cross-cultural, hands-on, short-term mission experiences. Since 1984, NYSUM has trained and lodged over 55,000 people in urban ministry, including groups from seminaries, universities, colleges, Bible schools, churches, and missions organizations. The following are examples of the outreaches that short term mission teams are involved in during the NYSUM Experience:

  • Cross-cultural evangelistic outreaches in Muslim, Jewish, Afro-Carribean, and Hispanic communities
  • Ministry to NYC’s homeless on streets and in soup kitchens
  • Ministry to NYC’s mentally disabled at school for people with cerebral palsy
  • Ministry to NYC’s terminally ill at local hospital
  • Prayer walk for the nations at the United Nations Headquarters

At NYSUM, we link each team with local NYC pastors, churches, and other ministry partners to reach the lost together. The following is what ministry leaders and students are saying about NYSUM:

“I thank God for NYSUM’s openness to the whole body of Christ and for building up the Kingdom of God in this great Metropolitan mission field.” - Pastor Jim Cymbala, The Brooklyn Tabernacle, Brooklyn, NY

“As a Pastor, it was a pleasure to see our kids ‘come out their shell’ and boldly proclaim the gospel. They’ve developed a compassionate heart for reaching the lost that will be much easier to express at home now through outreach ministry.” - Pastor Kevin Bolte, Central Assembly of God, Huntsville, AL

“God confirmed that I’m supposed to be a missionary.” - Student, Minnesota Youth Alive, Minneapolis, MN
