Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin

About Us

Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin (LVA) was established in 1974. LVA, a 501(c)3, is a nationally accredited affiliate of Pro Literacy America (formerly know as Literacy Volunteers of America).

Our mission is to provide free, one-on-one tutoring and other educational services to help adults in Androscoggin County acquire the basic reading, writing, and math skills they need to enhance their lives and achieve their personal goals.

We work to improve our community's literacy at three levels, through three different programs. Our Basic Literacy program matches trained volunteers with low-literacy adults for weekly, semi-structured tutoring sessions. For our Knowledge as Power Familiy Literacy program, child educators meet with families in their houses and work with parents and children together to meet the educational needs of an entire household. We also engaged the English Language Learner (ELL) population through our English Conversation Partners program, where trained volunteers meet with an ELL for an hour a week for casual conversation, with the goal of increasing the partners' abilities in spoken English.

We provide volunteer training specific to each of our programs.
