ImmersEd Inc. is a developing nonprofit that seeks to close the opportunity gap for students in Detroit by connecting them with curriculum and community-aligned learning experiences. At ImmersEd, we know that true engagement happens when students understand the "why" behind their learning and are able to go outside of the classroom to see its real-life application. We believe that this level of engagement allows students to fall in love with learning, and we believe that all students deserve these rich school experiences.

Unfortunately, due to budget and time constraints, this opportunity for application is not always possible for many students in Detroit. We believe this is one of the reasons that, particularly in middle school, engagement begins to decline sharply, as students feel that learning in the classroom is disconnected from their lives outside of it. ImmersEd Inc. seeks to increase engagement, and ultimately achievement, by coordinating and funding relevant field trips for middle schools across Detroit that tie directly to the learning happening in the classroom.

Beginning in fall of 2021, ImmersEd Inc. will partner with middle schools in Detroit to coordinate and fund curricular-aligned experiential learning trips. For each partner school, ImmersEd Inc. will provide a menu of field trips from which teachers can choose, so that teachers have the autonomy to choose which trips will map directly onto their curriculum and have the most positive impact on their class. Each partner school will choose 4-6 field trips per grade, including one per subject and one capstone trip for the grade level (including a 6th grade camping trip to start the year, and an 8th grade capstone trip prior to promotion). This program is free to partner schools; teachers are simply required to provide reflection opportunities (written by ImmersEd) before, during, and after the trip, so that the connection between the classroom and the learning opportunity is explicit.
