City Schoolyard Garden at Buford Middle School

About Us

The mission of the City Schoolyard Garden at Buford is to provide an experiential learning environment for city middle school students using the garden as a resource to support academics, for guidance in making healthy food choices, and to offer opportunities for mentoring, collaboration and friendship.

The City Schoolyard Garden at Buford is a thriving organic garden located on the grounds of Buford Middle School in Charlottesville, VA. The garden, covering about 4000 sf, is the focus of a classroom-to-garden program that engages the 7th and 8th grade students at Buford in activities that support Virginia’s Standards of Learning curricular requirements. The garden is also used for a weekly after-school garden club.

This program is independent of the Charlottesville City Schools and operates within an agreement to administer the garden resource at Buford Middle School. The City Schoolyard Garden program at Buford is a nonprofit organization, is grant funded and operates under the direction of an advisory board and program director.
