About Us

We believe that classical music is fun, interactive, modern and relevant.

But awkward concert protocols and an inability to engage young audiences get in the way of appreciation and adoption.

In other words, the culture around the music impedes appreciation of the music.

Fermata is changing the culture.

Based in Cambridge, MA, Fermata is reinventing the classical music concert through small concerts in unexpected places. Our goal is to change the perception of classical music and cultivate a lifelong appreciation for it. These concerts do not require formal dress or a sense of decorum; rather the audience is encouraged to respond to the music, clap in between movements,  and talk to the artists. By keeping the concert experience informal, listeners can relax and truly listen to the music in their own way and challenge their own preconceived notions about classical music.

New audiences are a key part of Fermata’s mission, and this is evident in the choice to perform in the Boston area. Fermata uses the term new audiences in a very broad manner and defines them as “Anybody that hasn’t fallen in love with classical music and/or been to a Fermata concert in the past.” All of our concerts are low cost ($10 or less) or free, and 100% of our proceeds go to our world class musicians.

The 2019-2020 season currently features 16 young professionals, who hail from places like the New England Conservatory, Julliard, and Oberlin. They win international competitions, play in the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and truly represent the best new talent in the classical music world.
