About Us

Friends of the Earth (FoE) is a 38-year old environmental nonprofit organization currently conducting major campaigns on global warming, human health and toxics elimination, cleaner energy and transportation, and the reduction of government subsidies to environmentally destructive projects. Founded by David Brower, Friends of the Earth now also includes Bluewater Network (based in San Francisco), which merged with FoE in early 2005, bringing with it cutting-edge campaigns to cut global warming emissions from vehicles and vessels. We are the U.S. voice of Friends of the Earth International, an influential, international network of grassroots groups operating in 70 countries.

Friends of the Earth has amassed an impressive list of accomplishments, including re-directing $16 billion in oil and coal industry subsidies to vital alternative energy research, initiation and passage of the landmark Pavley California Vehicle Greenhouse Gas Emissions law which has been copied by 15 states and Canada, trend-setting legislation to stop ship dumping off the California coast, creation of the greenest ferry fleet in the nation for San Francisco Bay, victories in banning inappropriate use of jetskis and off road vehicles in U.S. national parks and marine sanctuaries, and winning a monumental recent Supreme Court decision that directs EPA to regulate carbon dioxide.
