Southeastern Environmental Education Alliance

About Us

The Southeastern Environmental Education Alliance (SEEAL) is a coalition of 25 leading Southeastern Massachusetts’ environmental nonprofits, public agencies, schools, and universities. Founded in 1997, SEEAL’s mission is to support its partners' capacity to improve environmental education, justice, and stewardship in the region. To accomplish this mission, SEEAL works cooperatively to identify and coordinate effective collaborations that exceed the individual capacity of any single group in order to leverage the full scope of expertise, resources, and wisdom within the Alliance. SEEAL is one of the flagship program funds of the Community Foundation of Southeastern Massachusetts.

Current SEEAL initiatives include the SouthCoast Energy Challenge, to mobilize 35,000 households to reduce CO2 emissions by 120.5 million lbs. in three years; and the SEEAL Conservation Corp, a project to employ and train local youth as stewards through hands-on conservation projects. Together, SEEAL members also host an annual “Shrink Your Footprint Fair,” and participate in the planning and facilitation of the Marion Institute’s annual “Connecting for Change: A Bioneers by the Bay Conference." During 2008-2010, SEEAL administered a two-year “Sustainable New Bedford” grant made to the City of New Bedford by the EPA. Through this project, small grants were awarded to 43 organizations for 30 sustainability-related collaborative educational opportunities. Collectively, the project generated over 2400 hours of community service and reached more than 13,000 people.
