Salt Lake Neighborhood Housing Services was incorporated in 1977 in response to neighborhoods becoming blighted due to the process of bank red lining. Residents, lending institutions, and Salt Lake City government came together to raise funds to establish the first community development corporation in Salt Lake City to focus on neighborhood revitalization. During this same time at the national level, urban renewal resulted in the creation of Neighborhood Reinvestment in 1978. In 2007, as part of a national branding initiative, dozens of network organizations started using the NeighborWorks name. Salt Lake Neighborhood Housing Services, Inc. was approved and licensed to start doing business in 2008 as NeighborWorks Salt Lake.
