  • Mission

Upper West Side Cinema Center is a nonprofit formed to acquire and reinvent the former Metro Theater at Broadway & 100th Street into a vibrant, five-screen arthouse cinema that will serve diverse surrounding communities and be a symbol of urban renewal for the immediate neighborhood. As the only independent movie house north of Lincoln Center, we will fill a demand not just for film-goers who otherwise have to travel great distances, but for filmmakers shut out of showcase opportunities at commercial and bigger theaters.

    About Us

In April 2025, UWSCC bought the former Metro Theater with significant help from New York City and State officials and a generous donation from Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg’s Hearthland Foundation. We now are engaged in a capital campaign for the theater's remodeling into a multi-screen cinema that will offer programming not available elsewhere in the area and include partnerships with local institutions across a wide swatch of West Side neighborhoods. As UWSCC enters this new phase, we are recruiting volunteers for key roles: bookkeeper, grants writer, social media manager.
