ATRAVES is an international non-profit that builds connections among communities, organizations and people in Nicaragua and internationally to support development, health and educational efforts in Nicaragua. ATRAVES was founded in 2004 by Nicaraguan educators, community workers and one U.S. volunteer. ATRAVES is comprised of ATRAVES U.S., Inc. (a U.S. (501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, EIN: 13-4347155) and ATRAVES Nicaragua (a Nicaraguan 501(c)(3) equivalent charitable organization located in Managua, Nicaragua). We are a non-religious, non-partisan organization, and we do not practice or support discrimination of any kind.

The mission of ATRAVES is to join with Nicaraguan communities to promote and sustain solidarity across borders; define, articulate and create community-based development, health, and education together.ATRAVES mobilizes human, financial and material resources to support the resulting programming.

We currently focus our work on Barrio Camilo Ortega/William Galeano, which is a community on the outskirts of Managua, and on San Juan de Oriente, which is a village in the Masaya department. In William Galeano, we have built a clinic and health education facility called the Casa de Salud, where we provide medical services and an innovative community health worker (promotora) program. We support students at our partner school with enrichment programming including English, computer skills and the arts, and we offer professional development workshops for educators from around Nicaragua. We provide adult education in job skills, literacy and community-based development. In San Juan de Oriente, we support a small group of artisans, building their capacity to access fair trade markets, increase their cooperation and economic wellbeing, and promote their artistry and culture. The Volunteer Program supports all of these efforts, while creating amazing opportunities for international volunteers to "work across borders." All our activities are based in the practice of building solidaridad among all stakeholders, and mobilizing it to create concrete, sustainable outcomes for our community partners.
