Our non-profit mission is:
We seek to empower small-scale global artisans and farmers of low income by establishing enduring trading partnerships that foster sustainable employment and resources. We are dedicated to upholding their rights and nurturing a vision of hope within their communities. By connecting these talented individuals with fair market access, we aim to enhance their livelihoods and promote economic resilience, ensuring a brighter future for all. We also wish to further international understanding by helping North Americans better understand the causes of global poverty and injustice. We hope to accomplish this mission through the operation of The World Crafted on King store in the Washington metropolitan area.
Located on Historic King Street, our store opened in 1994 by a group of dedicated folks with a passion for the mission of Ten Thousand Villages. We are more than just a store, we are a way for you to shop with intention, shop your values and connect with your global villages. From communities throughout the world, every inspired design is crafted with love using local materials (usually natural or recycled) and time-honored skills by makers we have known and worked with for years…even decades. In our shop, you will discover organic clothing + jewelry, home décor + hand knotted rugs and specialty foods + beverages from over 45 countries. We do business differently, putting people and the planet first. You can trust your handmade purchase and donation directly impacts the life and community its maker, breaking the cycle of generational poverty and igniting social change.Visit us today!
