About Us

The Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences (I-LABS) is an interdisciplinary center at the University of Washington dedicated to discovering the core principles of human learning, with special emphasis on work that will enable all children from 0 to 5 to achieve their full potential.By combining state-of-the-art brain-imaging technology and behavioral measures, I-LABS laboratories are helping to shape tomorrow’s guidelines for early learning, both prior to school and in school, as they explore the influence of biology and culture on child development

MISSION AND VISION

We believe that scientific study of the developing mind and brain is the next great research frontier and that discoveries in the next decade will be comparable to those in genetics, biotechnology, and informatics. Our goal is to make Seattle and the Institute the nexus of 21st century research on the science of early learning. We seek to quicken the pace of discoveries that make a difference to theory and practice. By conducting innovative research and disseminating this knowledge to international audiences, we will advance the understanding and appreciation of the importance of learning throughout the lifespan.

The Institute has two missions. The first is to be the foremost generator of new scientific discoveries about mind and brain development during the first five years of life. The second is to translate and disseminate cutting-edge research discoveries to global constituents in order to help unify the science of learning and the practice of learning.

Creating community connections is driven through our Translation, Outreach and Education (TOE) branch. In partnership with Thrive by Five Washington, I-LABS’ “information ambassadors” seek to address the need for accurate and clear information about early learning by interpreting research findings into key points and messages for lay audiences that include parents, policy makers, child and family advocates, and the public.
