CorStone (www.corstone.org) is an internationally-recognized nonprofit organization that develops and provides personal resilience programs to improve well-being for youth worldwide, focusing on adolescent girls as critical change-agents in their communities. CorStone is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland, US and conducts programs in India and Kenya. Its subsidiary, CorStone India Foundation, has three India offices (headquarters in Delhi and two field offices in Bihar).
We believe that cultivating personal resilience is a foundational step in helping youth to thrive—one which is often missing in development programs worldwide. Our evidence-based resilience programs work from the ‘inside out’, employing a strength-based approach to target the internal and social assets that youth need to overcome challenges and flourish. Research shows that CorStone’s Youth First and Girls First resilience programs improve mental, emotional, social, physical wellbeing, and school performance and engagement in a host of diverse, marginalized populations.
Over the past decade, CorStone has provided resilience-based training to nearly 100,000 marginalized youth and young women across India and Kenya. We have worked successfully in remote rural villages and densely populated urban slums, conducting both school and community-based programs. We have also conducted some of the world’s first and largest studies of resilience interventions in LMIC populations (published papers available on our website). Throughout this time, we have built a hard-earned reputation for integrity, rigor, commitment and measurable results among our beneficiaries and NGO, government, academic and funding partners.
Most recently, in Bihar, one of India’s poorest states, we have entered into a partnership with the Education Ministry, Bihar, to commence a ‘demonstration model’ for technical transfer and scale-up in over 1,100 schools, with the joint intention to eventually transfer capability to the government to scale resilience training to over 26,000 schools serving 2.6 million students across Bihar.
