Children's Hospital Bloodmobile

It is the mission of Children's National Medical Center-Blood Donor Center to provide an adequate and safe supply of blood for our patients.

When you donate blood to Children’s, it goes directly to our patients – so miracles happen sooner, rather than later. Babies undergoing heart surgery need blood that is no more than five days old. Countless numbers of children involved in accidents need blood transfusions almost immediately. Some children with certain medical conditions, such as sickle cell anemia, need one to 10 units of blood per month to live. One blood donation can support the needs of up to three or more patients at Children’s. Without this blood, many of the lifesaving procedures performed at Children's Hospital would not be possible.

Children’s hospital has a new 40-foot four bed Bloodmobile that will complement our hospital based donor center. The Bloodmobile is available to travel throughout Washington, DC every Tuesday and Thursday for sponsored blood drives to places of employment, schools, organizations, and places of worship. All it takes is 15 (minimum) to 25 (maximum) caring people who are willing to help sick and injured children.
