Earth Matter NY, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, and application of composting in New York City.
Earth Matter NY accepts and processes food waste as part of DSNY’s NYC Compost Project. The NYC Compost Project works to rebuild NYC’s soil, neighborhood by neighborhood.
Earth Matter operates a Compost Learning Center on Governors Island where, as part of the "Zero Waste Island" initiative, we collect and process food scraps from island food vendors and from source-separation bins placed around the island.
The Compost Learning Center has public open hours on weekends from Memorial Day through the end of September. At this site we also host a 140-hour adult compost operator intro course twice a year.
We also are a partner in the NYC area's "Billion Oyster Project", collecting and curing oyster shells from area restaurants, thus helping to advance this effort to remove oyster shells from the waste stream.
