  • Mission

    RJYChick Webb Council, Inc. shall advance the knowledge of the Chick Webb Memorial Recreation Center as an African American accomplishment of the only recreation center in the United States built by renowned African American entertainers (Joe Louis, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie and others along with Black businesses, benevolent groups and individuals). The Council shall advance the health and well being of youth and adults through recreation and education; promote the sustainability of the Center through advocacy; and to contribute to the vitality of the center and the adjoining neighborhoods.

    About Us

    RJY Chick Webb Council, Inc was founded May 3, 2019 to continue the work of the the Dunbar Coalition ( legendary East Baltimore residents and Paul Laurence Dunbar High School alumni), The Coalition prevented the demolition of the as developers proposed a state of art recreation center in a gentrifying neighborhood, The Coalition successfully achieved the designation of a local historic landmark. The Council has since negotiated the improvement and expansion of the Center after many years of disinvestment. The Council has also provided outreach within Baltimore City, the State of Maryland; and other States.
