SMFA’s Pre-College Summer Studio is a unique and rigorous studio art program for students who have completed at least their sophomore year of high school. It is a full-time, residential (with a commuter option), five-week program that aims to give students an opportunity to participate in an studio art program that stresses exploration of material, theme, content, and form, using various media and underscoring the necessity of individual commitment to the arts. All students take courses in painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, installation, video, digital photo, sound art, and performance. The interdisciplinary nature of the curriculum gives students a chance to explore who they are as artists and to connect with other artists at various stages in their careers. Trips to museums, artist studios, galleries, and sites throughout the city will give students a chance to explore Boston and its arts community and will stress elements of responsibility, self-worth, and cross-cultural understanding.
