About Us

RGH is part of Valley Citizen's Foundation for Healthcare, Inc. RGH is a Critical Access Hospital which is a designation given to rural hospitals. The Critical Access Hospital program is a United States federal program established in 1997 as part of the Balanced Budget Act. The program aims to offer small hospitals in rural areas to serve residents that would otherwise be a long distance from emergency

care.

RGH is non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide health care to the Western San Luis Valley. The tradition of hospital care at Del Norte started when St. Joseph’s Hospital opened in 1907. St. Joseph’s closed its doors in 1993. In 1996, Rio Grande Hospital at Del Norte re-opened at the old St. Joseph Hospital Building. The Rio Grande Hospital moved to its present location on August 11, 2004. The originally ten million dollar facility has grown since it’s opening. Not only a emergency room (ER) and hospital, now offering four clinics (Creede, Del Norte, Monte Vista, and South Fork) Laboratory, Radiology, two Physical Therapy locations (Del Norte and Monte Vista), Wound Care, Pharmacy, Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, and elective surgeries. Elective Surgeries is where volunteers are most needed on a regular basis.
