Macomb Literacy Partners

  • Mission

To improve the quality of life for all residents of Macomb County by working to eliminate adult illiteracy.

    About Us

Macomb Literacy Partners needs volunteer tutors to assist adults seeking literacy help. Our students come from all backgrounds and educational levels, and gather in class twice a week to work on their goals. Classes are grouped by reading levels, planned and taught by experienced teachers, and assisted by trained tutors. Our goal is to have a 1:1 student : tutor ratio.

The training program for tutors is a 5-hour workshop that explains some differences between adults and children as students, breaks down the classroom lesson into its four main components, and ensures that all MLP tutors are familiar with the language of an adult literacy classroom, as well as our specific program.

After training, tutors are asked to commit to a 2-hour class period, once per week, for the duration of the 12-week class. Help with extracurricular activities, like English as a Second Language conversation group, or open computer lab, would be welcome!

Interested tutors should visit the online orientation site (macombliteracy.org/tutor) to see if this opportunity is a good fit. If so, the link to register for tutor training is at the end of the presentation.
