Reach Out and Read at Winthrop

Mineola, NY

About Us

Reach Out and Read @ Winthrop-University Hospital is a program that stimulates and supports reading in infants and preschool children. We utilize the power of the doctor-patient relationship to stimulate parents to read more often to their children. Part of a national program (see Reachoutandread.org), we have volunteer readers in our waiting rooms to model reading aloud for parents and we train pediatricians to encourage parents to read to their children. These pediatricians give each family a brand new, age appropriate book during their regular check-up. Our americorps member will be involved in organizing this program in three sites and helping raise funds to buy these books. Located on beautiful Long Island, we are very near public transportation and only 25 minutes to Manhatten by train.
