  • About Us

Established in 2010, City of Promise (CoP) was initially created to serve as a “facilitator for several local nonprofits striving to reach students in the Starr Hill, Westhaven, and 10th and Page Neighborhoods.” Since then, CoP has been based in the Westhaven neighborhood, Charlottesville’s largest public housing site, and has become a trusted partner for families as they work to build sustainable pathways out of generational poverty and support their children’s educational achievement and opportunity.

CoP’s dual-generation model of supporting parents and children with in- and out-of-school programming recognizes the multifaceted ways that systemic racism and inequality continue to impact our communities. By addressing root causes and supporting families in building their own self-sufficiency, CoP is supporting long-term and transformative change.

Our goal is to make a positive impact on generational poverty through child-centered, education focused, dual generation programs and initiatives in Charlottesville.
