Essay Busters is a non-profit that gives underprivileged high school students the essential tools to write the required college essay. Economically disadvantaged, college-bound students learn how to communicate "Who I am" through the written word.
Responsibilities of the mentors include assisting students to select topics; write college personal statements and supplemental essays; and help fill out college applications. This school year, our student participants at Essay Busters: YPIE come from neighborhoods throughout Yonkers and many will be the first members of their families to attend college. Our students require extra support throughout the college admissions process. That's where you come in.
Our volunteer mentors will work closely with our high-school junior, college-bound students for seven sessions, on Saturdays from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM, September through November. During this time, mentors will be partnered with up to three students and help him/her write college essays and finalize college applications. Throughout this process, we anticipate that our mentors will form long-lasting bonds with their students and become an integral part of their college admission process.
