Index on Censorship is Britain's most prominent and one of the world's leading free expression organisations with a significant global reach through its journalism, events, advocacy and projects.

In the words of Nadine Gordimer, who has been a contributor to Index on Censorship's magazine throughout its almost 40-year history, 'people seem to forget that censorship is an act of oppression against readers as well as writers.'

Reporting on censorship around the world has always been at the core of Index's mission, since it was founded in 1971. Now, through its website, magazine, public campaigns, and arts and youth programmes, it is raising awareness about a variety of free speech issues among a wide audience in the UK and around the world.
