Orlando Math Circle (OMC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive community of student mathematicians. Rooted in the century-old Eastern European tradition, OMC offers a space for students to collaborate with mathematicians and enthusiasts on intriguing problems outside the classroom. Immigrants brought math circles to the US in the 1990s, and they have since flourished nationwide in various forms.
Since its inception in 2016, OMC has led math enrichment in Central Florida, starting with high school students bringing critical thinking to Meadowbrook Middle, a Title 1 school, through math games, art projects, and puzzles. OMC has pioneered initiatives such as hosting the international Math Kangaroo competition in Florida, organizing the first Global Math Week events, math festivals, international math modeling competitions, and the North American Computational Linguistics Olympiad in Central Florida.
We bring math festivals to communities and Title 1 schools to spark interest in mathematics among students and families. We train middle school, high school, and college students, as well as adults, to become mathematics outreach workers and facilitators. These individuals help others explore math topics beyond the school curriculum, develop problem-solving strategies, and enhance critical thinking by focusing on the process rather than just the answers.
Our mission includes increasing the participation of underrepresented groups, such as females, Hispanics, and Black students, in mathematics.
