South Bend Medical Foundation (SBMF) provides blood to Beacon Health System, Saint Joseph Health System and Elkhart Hospital. Blood cannot be manufactured and has to be donated from one person, tested and transfused into another. SBMF is a blood collection site where donors can come and donate a pint of whole blood, a unit of platelets, or a double unit of red cells. Blood donors 16-years-old can donate blood with parental consent. Donors must meet certain criteria, such as weighing 110 pounds in order to donate. Donors will fill out a questionnaire and will have a short physical screening for temperature, hematocrit, blood pressure and pulse. Donors will need about 45 minutes for the entire process of screening, donation and juice/ cookies! Remember: this is NOT a fasting test, please drink extra water and eat a good meal prior to your donation.
