JustLeadershipUSA Inc. (JLUSA) is dedicated to cutting the U.S. correctional population in half by 2030 while reducing crime. JLUSA empowers people most affected by incarceration to drive policy reform. JLUSA was founded in November 2014 on the principle that those closest to the problem are closest to the solution, by Glenn E. Martin, a national criminal justice reform advocate. JLUSA is a culmination of 20 years spent by founder Glenn E. Martin as a national criminal justice reform advocate, six of those years while serving time in New York State prisons, and countless interactions with stakeholders and people and families directly impacted by mass incarceration.
With input from countless other criminal justice reform stakeholders, advocates and formerly incarcerated people from around the country, JLUSA has identified three areas which strategically comprise our theory of change and primary activities:
Leadership: JLUSA believes that America’s most challenging barrier to expansive, systemic criminal and juvenile justice reform is the absence of clear and consistent leadership by those who have been directly affected by our failed public safety policies. JLUSA invests in and empowers formerly incarcerated men and women through our 12-month cohort-based Leading with Conviction (LwC) advanced leadership training program, and accelerated day-long Emerging Leaders (EL) training program to lead local and national efforts in advocating for criminal justice reform.
Advocacy: JLUSA provides formerly incarcerated leaders and their allies nationwide with the resources and opportunities to engage in direct and collective nonpartisan and non-lobbying education and advocacy efforts for decarceration policy reform at the local, state, and national levels. By supporting, launching, and executing local and national advocacy movements, JLUSA ensures that public safety policies are responsive to the needs of those affected by mass incarceration. Locally, JLUSA’s efforts include our #CLOSErikers Campaign which seeks to draw the support and engagement of key stakeholders, including impacted residents, to close the institution which has committed major human rights violations and other infractions which hinder any ability to make progress on criminal justice reform.
Membership: JLUSA mobilizes Americans to advocate on criminal justice reform issues through the development and nurturing of a national membership network in support of our goal of #halfby2030. In just 16 months since launch, JLUSA has secured thousands of members and anticipates growing this network significantly as the organization increases its staffing capacity and continues to scale.
