Camp ELSO is a community based environmental education focused nonprofit that uses the natural world to connect children from underrepresented communities to STEM. We take a multi-cultural approach to environmental STEM education rooted in justice and cultural history.
We serve children and families from communities underrepresented in STEM fields. So we support Black and Brown youth to Experience-Life-Science-Outdoors!
Our mission is to teach and frame STEAM and nature based education through a lens that center and elevates the stories, ways of knowing, needs and lived experiences of communities of color.
We currently have three main program areas: community and family outreach events like Girl's Engineering Day, Wayfinders day camps for children in K-8th grade, and a Children's Learning and Heritage Garden in the new Columbia community of north Portland. We are launching a new girls after school science club this January.
