About Us

Howl Arts, Inc. (Howl) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the past and celebrating the contemporary culture of the East Village and Lower East Side. Howl creates opportunities for artists to produce and show their work, and engages in activities aimed at improving the quality of life for artists and members of this creative community. Howl shines a light on the intersections of art and performance, community activism, social justice, rock and roll, gay rights and culture, immigration, fashion, and nightlife at the heart of the local community, where groundbreaking creativity and influential ideas still thrive.

Formally incorporated in 2009, Howl Arts, Inc. emerged from the Howl! Festival, which, from 2003-2014, brought together thousands of families, community members, artists, poets, and performers to celebrate the art, history, culture, and counterculture unique to the East Village and Lower East Side. Howl Arts continues to preserve and advance this creative spirit through a wide variety of activities, events, and workshops, which are all free and open to the public.
