  • Mission

The Women’s Law Center’s mission is to ensure the physical safety, economic security, and autonomy of women throughout the State. We work towards this goal by providing direct legal representation, information and referral services, and legislative advocacy.

    About Us

The Women’s Law Center of Maryland was founded in 1971 and incorporated in 1972 by a small group of passionate women law students and young lawyers who observed rampant, overt and damaging discrimination against women. The founders and early supporters organized a community of feminists and formed a progressive organization to promote and protect the legal rights of women. Using the legal system as a tool to fight inequities and make their voices heard, they educated women about their rights, filed impact cases and protested the most egregious examples of mistreatment based on gender.

Over four decades, the Women’s Law Center has evolved from a group of dedicated and energetic volunteers to a professional organization with paid staff members who serve over 11,000 individuals each year. Significant progress has been made and many obstacles to women’s success have been overcome. But full equality has not been achieved. In response to persistent challenges, our work continues through our direct legal services to protect the rights of individuals and strategic initiatives to achieve systemic change.
