  • About Us

The DSMA is a non-profit 501(c)(6) organization, made up of business and property owner volunteers, founded in 1956 to promote and improve the business activity in the Downtown District. Funding for the DSMA comes from Business Improvement District (BID) assessments that are collected by the City of San Mateo from annual business license fees.

Downtown San Mateo is located in the San Francisco Bay Area (midway between San Francisco and Palo Alto, CA) just north of Silicon Valley. Our historic Downtown is known for its independent culture, diversity, arts district, restaurants, and retail shopping. We have been the birthplace of companies like YouTube and Napster. Known for our great restaurants, we recently won Rand McNally’s “Best Small Town For Food” award.
