Community Club is still accepting new tutors, and new students in grades 6-11, for the second semester of the 2014-15 school year.
Community Club, one of the oldest tutoring/mentoring programs in Washington DC, is 53 years old! At 6:45pm each Thursday evening during the school year, more than 100 students and their tutors meet one-on-one to do homework at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church (NYAPC), located at 14th Street and New York Avenue, just east of the White House.
Students attend Study Hall from public and public charter high schools and middle schools across the city, while tutors come from across the metro area. Our tutors become role models for their students and offer a source of stability in the chaotic lives of adolescents. Tutors take an active interest in how their students are doing in school, which often involves visits with teachers or school counselors. The student/tutor relationship can extend beyond Thursday evenings to special outings to movies or restaurants, visits to each other's homes, and attendance at school events. Together, each student-tutor pair decides what shape their mentoring relationship will take. Over the decades, more than 2,500 volunteers and 2,000 students have participated in the program.
Community Club has a number of services that supplement the core tutoring sessions:
