The Women's Red Tent

The Women’s Red Tent (TWRT) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting ALL women impacted by problem gambling. We want to assist them to become empowered to step into a better life.

The mission of TWRT is to assist all women impacted by problem gambling to return to a life that is productive, meaningful, and fulfilling. This includes the female problem gambler as well as the female impacted by problem gambling, i.e. the sister, mother, wife/significant other, or daughter.

Female problem gamblers are the fastest growing population of problem gamblers in many areas of our nation and worldwide. This is due to many factors including availability, social and recreational pursuits, and online availability. Many women report that gambling allows them ways to dissociate from issues of trauma, abuse, and neglect.

We believe that in a safe and peaceful environment women have a greater opportunity to identify and focus on their own needs rather than the needs of others.

The Women’s Red Tent grew out of a series of “Think Tank” discussions with recovering female gamblers from the greater Phoenix metropolitan community. The group came together to brainstorm about ways to support one another in recovery. The most important consideration expressed by all the women was creating a safe venue for women to express themselves and feel comfortable to move forward in the recovery process.

After several months of discussions, we invited professionals from the community in to meet with our recovering women. Those professionals described ways women are typically supported in treatment for chemical dependency, trauma, and in outpatient settings for problem gambling treatment. A dialogue was opened regarding the unique concerns of all women impacted by problem gambling and not just the female gambler and the challenges many women face setting the foundation for sustained recovery. In other words, all women including those family members impacted by problem gambling seemed to have several related concerns.

The first program developed under TWRT is Hulen’s Hope. Hulen’s Hope is a safe harbor from women wanting long-lasting and life-changing recovery from problem gambling. Our treatment program is designed for women in recovery by women in recovery along side with gambling addiction experts.
