About Us

The Upcountry History Museum – Furman University through its collections, programs, and exhibitions preserves and interprets historical subjects pertaining to the Upcountry of South Carolina while bringing quality museum offerings from around the world to the Upcountry to encourage people to discover the world and the Upcountry’s role in it.

The purpose of The Upcountry History Museum – Furman University is to help people make meaningful and personal connections to history.

The goals of the Upcountry History Museum – Furman University are to expand audiences for history, to be a leader in history education, and to be a premier research institution.

The Upcountry History Museum – Furman University’s vision is to use history to strengthen community and shape its future.  We believe in the power of history to inspire the imagination, stimulate thought, and transform society. We believe that history is a powerful platform for examining and understanding the civic values and responsibilities of our democratic society.  As a public forum for the process of shared discovery, we will celebrate and cultivate the elements that create and bind community: complex stories from multiple points of view that explore the diverse legacies of our region and the world around us. Success will be measured by people participating more actively, and in an informed way, to create a vibrant community.
