About Us

Mercy Learning Center of Bridgeport, Inc. provides basic literacy and life skills training using a holistic approach within a compassionate, supportive environment to low-income, undereducated women without regard for race, religion, color, or creed.

Mercy Learning Center was founded 23 years ago to educate mothers, whose minimal education prevented them from becoming involved in thier childeren's schooling. Lacking the confidence to seek help from existing literacy organizations, these women were unable to serve as role models for their children and productive members of their community. In response, Mercy Learning Center of Bridgport, Inc. was founded in 1987.

Its goal is simple, but its effect is profound--offering women a means of self-sufficiency and a more helpful future for themselves and their families. Women who could not complete a job application or assist their children with homework are given the skills needed to do so. They are empowered to earn a GED diploma or enter the workforce or a job training program, thus helping to dissolve the cycle of poverty and illiteracy in the community.

Mercy Learning Center charges no fees or tuition, but instead relies on grants from corporations, private foundations, government, and local organizations, as well as donations from individuals.
