Rutgers Law School - Newark Clinical Program

Newark, NJ

About Us

At Rutgers Law School, our clinics are operating law offices, in which students and faculty work together representing clients. Students have responsibilities similar to those of associates in law firms, participating in all aspects of representation, including factual investigation, legal research and writing, interviewing, client counseling, document drafting, development and implementation of strategy and tactics, negotiation, and presentation of evidence and legal argument in adjudicatory proceedings. Unlike associate or law clerk positions, clinics provide the opportunity for an intensively supervised transition to law practice with clinical faculty serving as the “safety net” or “training wheels” for all student lawyering with a primary focus on the student’s professional development and growth.

Our clinics include a broad range of practice areas, including representation of children, representing nonprofit groups in transactional work, litigating constitutional, international human rights, and similar test case issues, dealing with federal tax issues, helping students in need of special education, and providing legal assistance to poor people facing criminal charges, or who have housing, family, consumer or social security disputes.

In addition to our students, the clinical program at Rutgers Law School in Newark employs several staff attorneys who work with faculty in providing these important services.
