About Us

Phil Cavanagh’s family has a rich history of public service in Detroit, Wayne County, and the State of Michigan. As a Cavanagh, this heritage has been deeply ingrained in his life. As a current County Commissioner completing his fourth two-year term, Phil Cavanagh has a strong public record that reflects his Democratic values serving the citizens in the 9th District.

Phil Cavanagh is a proud parent of three daughters: Erin, Veronica, and Mary. Erin and Veronica are graduates of Thurston High School where Mary is entering her senior year. The family has lived in Redford Township for over six years.

Phil holds B.S. and B.A. degrees in Business Administration and Accounting from Aquinas College, a Masters in Business Administration in addition to a Juris Doctorate law degree from the University of Detroit Mercy, has completed the Michigan Political Leadership Program fellowship, and completed the Program for Senior Executives in State and Local Government at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Commissioner Cavanagh was the 2005 recipient of the Neighborhood Service Organization “Outstanding Community Service Award,” and the 2004 recipient of the ARC’s “Outstanding Legislative Advocacy” award. On June 5, 2008 Phil Cavanagh was awarded “Child Advocate of the Year” from Vista Maria, Michigan’s largest non-profit home for troubled girls.
