Tahirih Justice Center Atlanta

The Tahirih Justice Center was founded in 1997 following a high-profile case, Matter of Kasinga, that set a national precedent and revolutionized asylum law in the United States. The decision set precedent for survivors fleeing gender-based persecution to secure justice in the United States.

Since 1997, the Tahirih Justice Center has provided free holistic legal and social services to ensure that immigrant survivors have access to protections, including stable immigration status in the DC metro area. In response to a need in Atlanta, Tahirih expanded its service area by establishing an office here in 2018. Our dedicated staff has been at the forefront of assisting and advocating for immigrant survivors in the Atlanta region.

Our three-pronged approach - direct services, social services, and policy advocacy - achieves lasting social change by empowering immigrant families to transform their life through access to legal and social support; helping our community to reframe the issues of gender-based violence; and defending immigrant rights’ in public policy, regulations, and laws. In our 25 years of service, Tahirih has served more than 30,000 individuals nationwide seeking protection from gender-based human rights abuses.
