SAFOS DANCE THEATRE

As a small organization, Safos partners/collaborates with other Latinx serving and/or Arizona-based organizations to offer programs that fulfill our mission. FY 18-19, Safos engaged in the following: 1)Safos was a collaborator/partner for 2019 Dance in the Desert (DITD): A Gathering of Latinx Dancemakers in Tucson. This year’s gathering was a choreography retreat and professional development series for Arizona-based Latinx choreographers, dancers. Fulfilled mission by providing 2) Phase1 of Las Fronterizas (LF) project. LF is a multiyear multidisciplinary (dance, theater, digital arts) project in collaboration with Rising Youth Theatre (Phoenix), Border Arts Corridor (Douglas). Phase1 included Safos-led dance workshops and community interviews. Fulfilled mission by a) introducing Latinx dance artists to new Arizona audiences. 3) Performances, Residencies. FY18-19 performances, residencies include: "Duality: Ometeotl" Nov 3-4, 2019 at Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix fpr the Día de los Muertos festival. MakerSpace Experience Residency at Keshet Dance & Center for the Arts 2019 in ABQ, NM. that included Safos-led master classes and embodied, scholarly research on Latinx folk dances. c) Devised dance theatre residency at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) in ABQ, NM that took place 2019 serving youth programs. Fulfilled mission by a) supporting, showcasing work of Latinx dancemakers, b) contracting Latinx dancers, c) introducing work to new audiences in Arizona, New Mexico.
