About Us

Education (”elimu” in Swahili) is integral to development. To alleviate extreme poverty, both the poor and the rich of the world need to be educated: the poor need to be given the opportunity to improve their lives, and the rich need to truly understand the plight of the poor.

The Elimu Project aims to connect students around the world in a common cause to combat poverty through education. For students in developing countries, we offer a scholarship fund with money raised through our events and sales of merchandise. For Canadian students, we are devoted to popular education techniques that raise awareness of various development issues and encourage our members to be global citizens.

in tanzania…

Although primary school is free, with the cost of high school on average being $570 USD per student and the average per capita income of Tanzania $550 USD, education is an opporunity for the few. Recent stastics show that only 9% of elementary school graduates can afford to go to high school, leaving Tanzania with a mass of uneducated children. In the case of Mivinjeni Primary School, out of a class of 96, only 16 were able to attend high school.

education as development…

Education is integral to development. To alleviate extreme poverty, both the poor and the rich of the world need to be educated: the poor need to be given the opportunity to improve their lives, and the rich need to truly understand the plight of the poor. The second of eight Millenium Development goals provisioned by the UN in 2001, outlines the need and right for all children to go to school.

the scholarship fund…

The Elimu project is establishing a scholarship fund to enable students in Tanzania to go to high school. The scholarships will pay for enrolment, living expenses, books, and uniforms. We hope to renew the scholarships over the 6 years that the students will attend high school.

fundraising…

We will also be having various events throughout the year, from concerts to speaker series. We hope to later fund our scholarships through selling ethical merchandise: fair trade printed t-shirts, batik canvas bags, leather wristbands.
