About Us

Founded in 1996, Green Earth Volunteers (GEV) is one of China's oldest local environmental NGOs.

Our mission is to serve as a vehicle for grassroots public participation through encouraging volunteerism. We also support environmental journalism in China, with the goals of improving awareness of environmental issues and improving information transparency.

Many of our current projects focus on water issues, including encouraging national cooperation on river protection, and we are part of the global Waterkeepers Alliance.

In 2007 GEV formally registered with the Ministry of Civil Affairs as the "Green Earth Environmental Scientific Research Centre." Friends are now working with GEV to create a stable and professional management staff as a foundation on which to consolidate and expand our activities.

Founder GEV was founded in 1996 by radio journalist Ms. Wang Yongchen, a prolific writer and award-winning journalist. Wang's media credentials and reputation as a dedicated reporter, as well as her courage in taking on contentious issues, help explain our effectiveness to date.

China Green NewsProject Begun in 2009, the volunteer team of China Green News has been providing English language news from the grassroots of China for nearly two years. A partner of the Guardian Environment Network, we hope that through additional volunteer and financial support, we will be able to expand our coverage to include more, and more complete, translations of articles from the Chinese media.

We also provide a news digest called the China Environment Brief twice a week. For examples of the China Environment Brief please see our Latest News section, or click on the homepage link to subscribe.

Explanations of GEV's other projects, including the Yellow River Decade Project, Decade River Project, and Environmental Journalist Salon, will be provided soon.

Funding To date, GEV has relied primarily on volunteers, but has also received some funding from overseas groups, including small grants from the Blue Moon Fund, Canon, the Natural Resources Defense Council, the French Embassy, Misereor Foundation the Rockefeller Brothers Foundation, and Waterkeepers Alliance.
