  • Mission

    Brooklyn Public Library seeks adults interested in becoming Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutors. Volunteer Literacy Tutors at the Brooklyn Public Library Centers tutor adults in the community who, for a variety of reasons, are learning to read and write. Through books, technology and interactive classroom instruction taught by professional and friendly tutors, adult build the skills needed to meet their personal, educational and employment goals.

    About Us

    Groups are for participants 17 years and older who are functioning below the high school level. Emphasis is on reading, writing and HSE preparation. All programs are available morning, afternoon, evening and Saturdays.

    What we do

    Adult Basic Education (ABE)

    Assist with obtaining your high school equivalency diploma (HSE)

    Citizenship Prep

    Basic Computer Literacy

    BPL Literacy Volunteer Tutor

    Are comfortable reading and writing

    Have graduated high school

    View learning as a dynamic and ongoing process

    Receive 21 hours of training

    Choose daytime, evening, or Saturday tutoring session
