About Us

The Women's Justice Institute (WJI) is an organization that works to ensure that women impacted by the criminal legal system are heard and seen. We are working to reduce the women's prison population by 50%+ in the next 8 years, to improve outcomes for women and their children (including trans women who are incarcerated at non-women's facilities), and to reduce the harm they are experiencing right now. In addition, the WJI recently released a historic report and blueprint for change at redefine.womensjusticeinstitute.org.

In addition to policy and research, the WJI also works to shape legislation and to advocate for individuals in jail or prison. We also have a partnership with Ascend Justice where we provide civil legal services for survivors of gender-based violence in women's prison. In addition, we have a reentry program for women leaving prison to provide substance use treatment and care coordination for women as they return to Cook County.
