About Us

The Alliance for a Living Ocean (ALO) is a non-profit, grassroots, environmental group headquartered on Long Beach Island, NJ. ALO was formed in 1987, in response to medical waste wash-ups that were closing area beaches at that time. The founders were instrumental in changing ocean dumping laws and those governing tracing medical waste. It was the first group of its kind on Long Beach Island.

Since then, ALO has evolved its platform with the changing environmental issues, educated 1,000s of residents and visitors, ran annual Earth Day cleanups, testified at countless public hearings, and now continues to work on keeping the Island's beaches pristine and the waters of Barnegat Bay healthy.

The mission of the Alliance for a Living Ocean is to promote and maintain clean water and a healthy coastal environment through education and action. We recognize the need to manage our entire watershed since all water flows from "the raindrop to the ocean."
