About Us

Our Mission | The In[HEIR]itance Project practices an open artistic process to create theater from authentic community dialogue about shared inheritances.

Our Vision | The In[HEIR]itance Project envisions a national network of trained In[HEIR]itance artists, activating community members to participate in challenging civic conversations through projects, strengthened by the wisdom of their shared inheritances.

Our Values | PRACTICE

Practice is both a habit (as in religious practice) and an acknowledgment of the primacy of process. We create an atmosphere where the artists, the community, and the art itself are constantly learning and growing through the practice of our methodology.

OPEN PROCESS

Most artists only share their art when it’s finished and most audiences only experience art when it’s finished. We collaborate with community members as participants and co-creators at every stage throughout the artistic process.

AUTHENTICITY

The widest variety of community members are included in and represented throughout the devising process, and the In[HEIR]itance artists facilitating the process should feel representative of the community.

CONVERSATION

In response to the modern trap of spending time in digital silos, our work invites people into live, shared space in ways that open up the possibility for engagement around challenging issues in communities.

INHERITANCE

At the core of our work is the question of how our shared stories, traditions, possessions, conditions, traits, beliefs, cultures and customs impact our collective zeitgeist, and how reexamining these inheritances together can help imagine creative solutions for a better future for all.
