Musica en las Aldeas.

Música en las Aldeas is an organization that was founded with the goal of offering formal music education to children and youth that would not otherwise have access to learning this art form.

The beneficiaries of the Música en las Aldeas program —MELA— are the underprivileged children and youth between the ages of 6 to 20 years who live in Antigua Guatemala and its surrounding villages.

MELA opened in May 2014 and is located on the plaza of the San Gaspar Vivar village. We currently have five teachers and30 students, some of which are privately sponsored. The children can choose violin, piano, guitar, recorder or vocal technique classes, and music theory and skills, choir, and recorder ensambles are part of the curriculum. Students must attent a total of four hours per week and can use the school's facilities to practice; some receive instruments on loan.

Fundraising activities have included the organization of concerts with renowned international musicians. Our aim is to increase the number of children served and the school's musical curricula in accordance with the funds obtained. We are seeking volunteers.
