About Us

In 1979, a group of Wisconsin families caring for loved ones with serious mental illnesses came together for mutual support, understanding and empowerment. From this humble beginning emerged a national grassroots movement known as the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) - the nation's largest, non-profit, 501(c)(3) mental health organization with affiliates in every state of the U.S. and the District of Columbia. During the past four (4) decades, thousands of parents, spouses, siblings, friends and individuals living with mental health conditions have worked tirelessly to bring mental illness out of the shadows.

NAMI envisions a world where all persons living with mental health conditions experience resiliency, wellness and recovery. This vision requires NAMI to raise the public's awareness of mental illness, its impact, as well as, the hope and reality of recovery and resilience. NAMI anticipates the powerful potential of a society where we will no longer have people with unmet mental health needs and limited access to community-based resources.

In 1981, NAMI Prince George's County was founded as Friends of the Mentally Ill and later changed its name to NAMI Prince George's County, MD. We are Prince George’s County’s designated NAMI Affiliate. Our mission is to build better lives for individuals and their families in this Prince George’s County who are impacted by mental illness through education, support, public awareness, and advocacy programs.
