12 PLUS (12+) aims to increase educational equity by building school cultures that inspire academic achievement and empower students to pursue education beyond the 12th grade. 12+ partners with high schools in Philadelphia to redefine what is possible for their students. Through a three-pronged approach to create welcoming learning environments, provide individualized support, and implement practical college-access resources, 12+ seeks to transform school cultures and inspire students to unlock their full potential.
In 2010, 12+ began as a mentoring program for nine high school students at Kensington Health Sciences Academy, which belonged to the lowest tier of schools in the School District of Philadelphia. All nine students successfully enrolled in college the following year. In 2012, 12+ transitioned to serving the entire student body in order to change the trajectory of the whole school, rather than a select few students. KHSA’s overall college-going rate increased from 10% in 2010 to over 80% in 2015. Now, 12+ serves over 1500 students in three partner schools throughout Philadelphia.
