Puppetry in Practice

About Us

Puppetry in Practice (PiP), Inc is committed to a multi-arts approach to literacy and learning. PIP is a non-profit organization founded in 1980 by English as a Second Language educator Dr. Tova Ackerman. Developed in association with Brooklyn College, PiP conducts school residencies (Pre-K to 12), afterschool workshops and literacy-based parent-child programs, teacher training seminars and graduate courses. PiP has placed dynamic and professional teaching artists into NYC schools to cover a broad range of curriculum topics and areas of study with a hands-on, arts-based approach. Our projects range from puppet making and performance to stop-motion animation. Over the years, our staff has consisted of working artists at various stages in their professional careers. They have been performers, teachers, puppet builders, artists, filmmakers, musicians, authors and illustrators. They have performed puppet shows, led theater programming in schools and developed arts-based projects with students, teachers and parents throughout NYC.
