  • About Us

    Our Mission

    Empower students in Inwood and Washington Heights to become agents for change through community-focused leadership, character development and college preparedness.

    Our Vision

    We regard our students as burgeoning assets to their community and are prepared to help them develop the leadership tools they need to be successful in college and beyond.

    This vision encompasses three goals:
    1. Ensure all students graduate reading, writing and doing math at or above grade level;
    2. Ensure all graduates are accepted to, and prepared to attend, 4-year college without remediation;
    3. Ensure our graduates are young men & women of good character, with outstanding leadership ability.

    Inwood Academy for Leadership Charter School (IAL) is a family-oriented, teacher-run school. We are committed to excellence and choice in public education for the families of Inwood, Washington Heights, and Upper Manhattan and are delivering on that commitment.

    IAL serves a large population of “at-risk” students:
    • 85% are eligible for free or reduced-priced lunch
    • Approximately 35% enter as English Language Learners
    • 20% qualify for Special Education services
    • Next year’s enrollment is 550 with 110 students in each grade 5 - 9

    We are chartered to grow by one grade per year until 2017-18, when we will serve 850 students in grades 5 through 12.

    • We believe that college is a viable option for all students.
    • We link academic rigor to explicit character development activities.
    • We offer extended class time—daily, monthly, and during summer break.
    • We reserve 50% of seats in our en¬rollment lottery for English Language Learners (ELLs).
    • We partner with local organizations to provide family services.
    • We maintain strong ties to the local community.
